Do you want to have blight hair and double eyelid?

EveryJapanese young woman loves blighter hair, I must say. I , this writer now have black hair, but used to dye my hair brown. When I look around my university, three out of four women have brown -coloured hair. Many of them have very simillar hair style, which hve three rules, “with softly curled bangs", “medium long or long"and “let their hair hang down". People say this is an adequate style, and think they look better with this style. I cannot generalize the taste of whole university students or the same generation, but undeniably that hair style is very common.
I shall refer to one more tendency of young women. In Japan, it is believed that “bigger eyes " make women prettier. Of course there are some actress and models who have average sized eye, and their faces are liked by everyone for the reasons of their adorable smile or well-balanced faces. However, the cover girls of magazines targeting in their twenties, or young fresh models have big, clear eyes. What differenciates eye size is whether they have single or double eyelids. Moderately, double eye-lids make one’s eyes bigger and more conspicuous than single eyelids. So the eye lids are an important symbol of ones’ face. When you go to pharmacies or department store in Japan, you can find many kinds of eye-glues, and adhisve sticker for eyes. Even when you are searching something on the internet, the ad for the medicine of eyelids sometimes pops up. In reality, there are more women than you think who make double eyelids by themselves. When such person blinks, sadly we can tell that their eyelids are not natural. Admittedly I feel happier when I wake up and suddenly have temporal double eyelids.
The question is, “What makes young women think having blighter hair and bigger eyes makes them prettier?". In this day and age, undoubtedly the influence of media falls onto the masses is huge. From what I’ve learned in media sociology in my university, the contribution of popular celebrities to goods could entice people into purchasing them. People see the advertisment, and products on them look very good with gorgeous celebrities, and they start to think they want to buy them. That is why countless world-famous bland use world-class celebrities. (c.f Cara Delevingne for Puma, Burberly, Jennifer lawrence for Dior, Chris Hemsworth for TAG Heuer) In this way, people think they want to be like them as much as possible, and idolize their existence. Before we knew it, the models are becoming our standard of beauty. In our minds, the thought of “models are right" controls our awarness. In Japan, models and actress who are popular among twenties have brown hairs, and double eyelids, and they are used as a category of beautiful ladies. As a result, Japanese young women admire them as beauties, and try to look like closer to them.
Now we know that young women want to have the similar features to models, but why the blighter and bigger? The answer is we are trying to be looked like American people! This is also what I learned from the professor’s cultural lecture, in prewar Japan, the standard of beauty was different. We Japanese thought the woman who have armond-eyes and modest face are beautiful at that time, but as the western conception was introduced in our country, three-dimensioned, clear faces became the element which pretty women should have. Especially when the U.S still was taking Japan under its control, many culture and customs were standardized for the U.S. Since this change has been handed to our ages, the face looks more like Western people are admired. (The image we have for Western ladies is “with blond" and “clear double eyelid eyes")
I really wonder when this beauty tendency of young women would change. Japan has accepted foreign culture so rapidly, and it still has grudge. Nobody knows when the concept will shift or remain. Personally speaking, I don’t like to mingle myself into the same category, so I always try to cherish my individuality. Just like “Like attracts like", I think the group of the people who look like each other have the same thoughts , and it is particurally true in Urban University like mine. As if so, we need our own colour, so as not to be overwhelmed by people. I never stop hoping everyone has their own style, and want everyone to love themselves, no matter what features they have. But it is actually none of my business. Sometimes we need to fit ourselves to others, because that is how society works.
Lastly, I did not touch with men’s tendency, because I cannot ascertain it from the point of girl’s view, but maybe about beauty, women catch on them more quickly. It seems to me thatmen are more free and flexiable about their apperance. I wish I could write about Japanese boys someday, but let’s leave it at that so far.
